Position Summary
The Assistant Director for Social Media and Community Management reports to the Senior Director, CAA Marketing – Digital Initiatives and Outreach. They will focus on growing, maintaining, and programming the Columbia Alumni Association’s (CAA) social media presence, to support programs, initiatives, and thought leadership produced by Columbia alumni, the CAA, Annual Fund Programs (AFP), and the Digital Marketing Initiatives Team (DMI). They will also leverage other content across Columbia that aligns with CAA and OAD objectives. The Assistant Director will be in charge of all social media channels and online community management to foster digital engagement and excitement for being part of the CAA and the broader Columbia community.
This is an opportunity for a talented self-starter to support the growth and development of social media channels and support audience engagement and communications across multiple digital channels. The Assistant Director should be a nimble and entertaining writer, able to convey information in a clear, concise, friendly and inspiring way that will lead to optimal community engagement and impact – whether the call-to-action is attending an event, supporting the University financially, or volunteering through Columbia. All content should be related to Columbia and the CAA’s brand, thought leadership initiatives, benefits and services, and should effectively communicate how these positively impact alumni and students. In addition to writing and curating material, the Assistant Director should be able to design and deploy visual and multi-media assets appropriate for social media, using services such as Canva.
This position will ensure that the team is meeting online engagement objectives across digital social media and community channels.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent required. Minimum of 2-4 years’ experience with demonstrated experience and expertise in digital channels with an emphasis on social media, community management, editing, development and implementation. Basic graphic design experience using platforms such as Canva. Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and InDesign a plus. Excellent verbal and written skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to produce video or audio content using personal devices or in-house equipment a plus. Ability to produce video or audio content using personal devices or in-house equipment a plus. Facility with online tools and resources; interest in exploring and experimenting with new platforms; ability to learn quickly and be flexible when working in the digital space. Ability to set priorities, exercise excellent judgment, and work with diplomacy and discretion in a highly pressured environment. Experience with Salesforce Social Studio or similar platform a plus. Experience with paid media a plus.
Other Requirements
Self-starter with project management skills, an eye for detail and ability to juggle a large volume of information in a fast-paced environment, and sense of strategic planning. Ability to work well with internal units, volunteers, and colleagues; a genuinely collaborative personality.
Subject to business needs, the Office of Alumni and Development supports a hybrid work arrangement for this position. Options will be discussed during the interview process.
