PMG FILE PHOTO: JONATHAN HOUSE - The Milwaukie High School Athletic Hall of Fame will hold ceremonies Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, to celebrate its nearly 300 members, including current NFL wide receiver Kendrick Bourne (4), shown here during his playing days as a Mustang.
The Milwaukie High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee has announced plans for two upcoming events to celebrate the school’s sporting history. The ceremonies will take place in early February, and the committee invites the community to help honor the Mustangs’ most accomplished athletes.
“We are excited to honor Milwaukie’s rich athletic heritage!” wrote the committee in a flyer announcing the events.
First, on Friday, Feb. 3, the Hall of Fame committee will unveil its revamped display in the school’s gymnasium corridor as the Mustangs host La Salle Prep for a basketball doubleheader. Between the two games, inductees will be introduced. Then, on Saturday, Feb. 4, an induction ceremony will be held at the Milwaukie Elks Lodge.
“The original committee began in 1982, and they had induction ceremonies in 1982 and 1992, and then the committee faded,” said Yvonne McKay, a member of the Hall of Fame committee. “None of the plaques in the high school were updated, so many athletes were never recognized or formally inducted. We are reinstalling the plaques and recognizing all the (Hall of Fame) members.”
The Milwaukie High School Athletic Hall of Fame consists of nearly 300 athletes and teams, including many recent standouts such as: Kelsey Campbell, Class of 2003, a pioneer in women’s wrestling who represented Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics; Kendrick Bourne, Class of 2013, who currently plays wide receiver for the New England Patriots of the National Football League; and Cali Denson, Class of 2022, who recently committed to Eastern Michigan University after becoming the fifth-highest scorer in the history of Oregon high school girls basketball.
For the Feb. 4 ceremony, inductees and children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge, while tickets will be $20 for guests and family members. Space will be limited, so all attendees must register. The committee strongly encourages attendees to purchase tickets online in advance.
In preparation for the events, the committee is seeking help from the community in the form of donations and volunteer work, as well as gathering additional information about Hall of Fame members.
