Suspect arrested after police standoff
A suspect fired at police during a standoff in a backyard of a Gresham home Wednesday evening, Dec. 7.
At 4 p.m. a U.S. Marshal's Task Force attempted to take a 47-year-old man into custody at a home in the 2000 block of Northeast 36th Court. But the man barricaded himself in a shed, and officers heard the suspect fire multiple shots while attempting verbal contact with him.
After about an hour talking with East Metro Crisis Negotiators, Thomas Justin Gutz surrendered to East Metro SWAT and was taken into custody. No officers were injured during the gunfire.
Corbett Christmas Chicken takes flight for holidays
Corbett's Christmas chicken is sporting a new set of feathers, but same holiday spirit as the fire department brings back the region's strangest tradition.
It all began in the late 1970s when the Corbett Fire Department wanted to rent a Santa suit to spread holiday cheer throughout the Columbia River Gorge. But because the firefighters were a little tardy in their planning, all of the Santa suits had been taken. So instead they settled for a chicken costume.
This year three families will be visited by the Christmas Chicken, with children receiving presents and the whole family getting needed items. The Christmas Chicken has a new suit because after thirty years of flying in the cold east wind, his feathers were getting frayed.
Donations to the families and Christmas Chicken can be made in fire boots set up at Liz's Coffee Cabin and the Corbett Country Market. Checks can be mailed to Christmas Chicken PO Box 1, Corbett, Oregon, 97019, or Venmo @Corbettfirefightersassn
