COURTESY PHOTO: OREGON DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION - Crews work Sunday, Dec. 4, at a landslide that shut down part of U.S. Highway 30, due to a landslide. The Oregon Department of Transportation says it may take the week of Dec. 5 through Dec. 9 before normal traffic resumes on U.S. Highway 30.
ODOT announced Sunday evening, Dec. 4, that one lane of traffic would resume, with flaggers, between the hours of 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. nightly to allow crews to continue removing hazardous rock from the cliff side between Astoria and Clatskanie.
The highway closure happened about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, following stormy weather. The closure occurred about 20 miles from Astoria and affected an area from approximately milepost 72 to milepost 76.
According to a news release issued by ODOT late in the afternoon, Dec. 4, "Crews are working down the cliff side to remove large sections of loose rock landslide. This hazardous rock scaling work must be done during daylight and coordinated with cleanup at the highway surface to keep crews safe."

ODOT Maintenance District 1 Manager, Mark Buffington, said in the Dec. 4 news release, "It is too dangerous and complicated to run traffic during the day. We are attempting to bring in another team of scalers tomorrow hoping to double our efforts."
ODOT is still recommending that you use U.S. 26 for travel between the Portland area and the Northern Oregon Coast.
If you choose to use U.S. 30 during the nighttime hours, ODOT asks that you drive at an extra cautious speed, watch for flaggers and expect a delay getting through the landslide area.
ODOT also says that day or night, don't use your GPS to detour on less developed roadways.
"They may not be maintained," ODOT said. "This can be dangerous for you, especially in these wintry weather conditions."
The Oregon transportation department cannot estimate a time when all lanes will be open.
