A recently completed solar panel project in Boring will help provide clean energy for locals, low-income residents and Oregon businesses.
The Skyward Community Solar Project celebrated its opening on Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Boring with a ribbon cutting. The event brought together the solar panel's owners, partners and other guests connected to the multi-year-long project. 
The Skyward panels, which are owned and operated by Maryland-based energy company Standard Solar, are part of Oregon's Community Solar Program. The program provides solar energy that is generated from a central location to multiple subscribers.
"Our long-term goal is to own and operate solar projects," said Eric Partyka, Standard Solar's Director of Business Development. "The unique thing about this project is that it is community solar, which means homeowners can buy energy from the facility even if they don't live right next to it."
According to Standard Solar, the Boring location will generate roughly 3.6 million kilowatt hours of clean energy each year, that is equal to the yearly energy consumption of 827 homes.
Residents and Oregon business subscribers, including Nike and Microsoft, will benefit by receiving a contracted discount on their electric bills each month.
Microsoft and Nike will make up the commercial allocation of energy from the Skyward panels. Approximately 100 Nike employees have also subscribed to the residential portion of the project.
In addition, 10% of the Skyward generation has been allocated to qualified low- and moderate-income households, who in turn will receive a substantial discount on their electric bills.
