The Portland Timbers have their new playmaker.
The club on Monday, Dec. 5, made official the acquisition of 24-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder Evander.
To add Evander, Portland paid a club-record transfer fee to FC Midtjylland of Denmark's top league. The amount of the fee was not announced, but multiple reports indicated the fee is at least $10 million.
Evander is under contract with the Timbers for four years, through 2026, with a club option for 2027.
Listed at 5-foot-10 and 161 pounds, Evander will be a designated player and occupy an international slot on Portland's roster. The club did not announce any corresponding roster moves. The Timbers three DPs in 2022 were Sebastian Blanco, Yimmi Chara and Jaroslaw Niezgoda.
"It was clear from the beginning stages of this process that this was a great opportunity for both Evander and the Portland Timbers," Timbers technical director Ned Grabavoy said in the club's announcement. "He is a player with natural ability, capable of making an impact, and has already proven himself at a good standard. We see him as an integral part of the club's future."
Evander, whose full name is Evander da Silva Ferreira, will be expected to be the playmaker in midfield that the Timbers have lacked since Diego Valeri's prime. In five seasons with FC Midtjylland, he scored 50 goals and had 38 assists in 167 appearances. He played in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. His five assists in six Europa League matches this year led that tournament.
Starting his professional career in 2016, Evander played three seasons with Vasco da Gama in Brazil's top league. He debuted on March 5, 2016, at age 18.
At age 15, Evander played for Brazil's Under-16 national team. With the under-17 national team, Evander scored three goals to help Brazil win the South American Championship and he made two appearances at the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese, in the club's announcement, said Evander can be a game changer.
"His experience in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League allows us to believe that he will be able to adapt quickly to the MLS competition," Savarese said. "I am looking forward to incorporate Evander and start working with him to build a stronger team for the next season."
FC Midtjylland is one of Denmark's top clubs. Among players recently joining MLS from the Danish league is Nashville's Hany Mukhtar, the 2022 MVP of MLS as well as its top scorer with 23 goals and 11 assists.
