A Wilsonville man accused of murdering his stepfather in January 2021 was convicted of second-degree murder Monday, Dec. 5, after pleading guilty prior to his trial.
Jacob Matthew Nebeker, 33, was accused of killing Gilbert J. Gutjahr, 91, on Jan. 22, 2021, at a residence on Northwest Canterwood Way, by the Claremont Golf Club in Bethany.
Nebeker's cousin, who reported the crime to 911 that day, said he saw Nebeker strangling Gutjahr with an extension cord and a plastic bag.
Nebeker was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, and charges of second-degree abuse of a corpse were later added after detectives determined that Nebeker moved the body to "stage an accidental fall" and attempted to conceal other evidence, according to a Washington County Sheriff's Office press release issued Monday.
Nebeker said in his guilty plea that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol during the crime.
A 12-person jury was set to convene for opening statements Tuesday, Dec. 6, but the trial was canceled after Nebeker pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Monday. The two counts of second-degree abuse of a corpse were dismissed.
The plea bargain states he is facing life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years, according to court records.
